Sox players may have perceived they were poorly paid since, as Hornbaker has written, salaries ”were rarely given out and hardly ever correct.” SCANDAL ON THE SOUTH SIDE contains many quotes indicating the Sox felt mistreated including Felsch expressing contempt for the penny-pinching Comiskey. Murphy believed ”Comiskey underpaid his players and was rotten to them”. Noyes described Comiskey as a skinflint. Risberg complained of ”starvation wages”. The Sox threatened to strike in ’19.
